From Fake Headline to Full Story: The Weird Truth Behind The Yahtzee Club of Central Florida

I love a good headline—especially the kind that makes you pause and say, Wait… what?!

A while back, one floated across my feed that made me blink twice:

“Florida man, 37, arrested for kidnapping 27 people and forcing them to play Yahtzee for 36 hours straight.”

I laughed. I nodded. I didn’t even question it.

Because if you live in Florida, you get it. The phrase “Florida Man” is practically a genre at this point. And if I’m being honest, the headline didn’t even crack my top five. We’ve all heard wilder.

Still, something about this one stuck with me. I kept wondering: What if it wasn’t just a joke headline? What if there was a reason behind it?

What if the dice weren’t random?

What if Yahtzee was a ritual?

What if the players… wanted to be there?

And just like that, The Yahtzee Club of Central Florida was born.

🎲 The Game Was Just the Beginning

This story isn’t just a satire or a play on a meme—it became a strange, psychological tale about belief, control, community, and what it means to surrender yourself to something bigger… even if that something is a dusty old board game in the middle of nowhere.

The first chapter kicks off the serial with a simple question: Would you follow someone who made you feel seen—even if everyone else said they were crazy?

It’s weird. It’s slightly unsettling. It’s very Florida. And it’s 100% me.

💡 Where Stories Begin (Spoiler: It’s Not Always a Dream)

Writers are always asked, “Where do you get your ideas?” And while I could say dreams, or long walks on the beach, or whispered inspiration from the muses—I’d be lying.

Half the time it’s something like:

  • A bizarre news article I couldn’t stop thinking about.
  • A “true story” that sounds fake (or vice versa).
  • A throwaway joke that ends up spiraling into a full-on plot.

Headlines are stories waiting to be cracked open. And in a world where truth is often stranger than fiction, I love the challenge of turning something absurd into something layered and meaningful.

So yes—sometimes a fake headline inspires a real narrative.
And sometimes, a little dice game becomes a door into something much deeper.
